Chinese Conversation Level 1 

Learn Chinese to challenge yourself, improve employability, engage with rich histories and culture, travel, connect with your heritage and communicate with family, friends and work colleagues.

Our courses allow you to progressively increase your confidence and ability to communicate basic to more complex ideas and, if you wish, to work towards taking the Chinese proficiency (HSK) exam.​

Chinese Conversation Level 1A

Learn Chinese Mandarin for beginners, a language spoken by over one billion people!

This is a beginner’s course to support learners with no or very little knowledge of the Chinese language who want to use basic Chinese in daily communications. This course will also create a good foundation for further learning of Chinese.

The course will cover:

  • an introduction to the Chinese pronunciation system using pinyin
  • introducing yourself
  • telling the time
  • dates
  • basic conversation and more.

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • pronounce Modern Standard Chinese using pinyin
  • use simple expressions
  • exchange basic greetings
  • talk about occupations
  • use Chinese numbers in your daily life eg. count, age, date and time.

Chinese Conversation Level 1A

Extend your Chinese language skills and explore the Chinese culture in more depth.

A course for those who have basic Chinese conversation skills and understanding of pinyin to gain more knowledge and skills in everyday Chinese expressions.

This course will cover vocabulary to enable you to make phone calls, ask and give directions, and talk about hobbies.

​On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • make a phone call
  • make an appointment
  • ask for directions and places
  • host a friend at your house
  • talk about hobbies.

Chinese Conversation Level 1A

Expand your Chinese language skills and knowledge.

A course for those who wish to improve their language skills in listening and speaking and expand their Chinese cultural knowledge.

The course will cover vocabulary to enable you to do shopping, ordering food, talk about transportation and ask for a favour.

Participants may wish to sit the Chinese Proficiency HSK exam Level 1.

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • do shopping
  • order in a restaurant
  • talk about transportation
  • ask for a favour.

HSK Level 1 exam (optional):

Participants who pass the exam at this level can understand and use very simple Chinese phrases, meet basic needs for communication and possess the ability to further their Chinese language studies.
