Candidates Take the First CTCSOL Exam for the Year

On Saturday, 22nd April, a capacity 80 candidates participated in the online CTCSOL (Certificate for Teachers of Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages) exam, an internationally recognised Certificate that assesses one’s competency to teach Chinese. Candidates of various ages and backgrounds, including teachers, tertiary students, and language enthusiasts, took the exam that covered a wide range of topics, including Chinese grammar, vocabulary, and teaching methodology.

The Confucius Institute in Auckland (CI) is proud to be the only authorised test centre for the CTCSOL exam in the Oceania region – nearly 70% of participants are from Australia. CI works to provide a supportive environment for candidates to take the exam and to help achieve their language teaching and learning goals.

The CTCSOL is valuable in today’s globalised world, where successful candidates can be assessed internationally, enhance their teaching skills, and advance their careers.

Easter Sunday launches first HSK Exam for the year

For 31 people, Easter Sunday on April 9th, was being at the Confucius Institute in Auckland Chinese Exam Centre to sit the first Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) of the year. Held at the University of Auckland’s Clock Tower Building, candidates had opted to sit one of six HSK levels to assess their Chinese proficiency.

All the examinees were Chinese language learners ranging in age and occupation, including a student as young as seven.

Since its establishment in 2007, the Confucius Institute in Auckland has facilitated the Chinese Proficiency tests with increasing examinee numbers resulting in several ‘Excellent Test Centre’ awards, from China’s Chinese Test International, including one for 2022.

The Institute encourages more learners of Chinese to participate in this opportunity as HSK is the only official test of Chinese for non-native speakers and is a standardised test that is internationally recognised – so worthy and deserving to those who achieve it!

Oceania Chinese Teachers’ Conference Attracts Wide Audience

The Fifth Oceania Chinese Teachers’ Conference was a great success, bringing together educators, researchers, and industry experts across Australasia to explore the latest trends and best practices in Chinese language teaching and learning. Hosted on April 1st-2nd, at the University of Auckland’s Epsom campus, the conference was jointly organised by the New Zealand Chinese Language Teachers’ Association (NZCLTA), Tui Tuia | Learning Circle, and Confucius Institute in Auckland.

Many distinguished speakers including Mr Dong Zhixue, Education Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy in New Zealand; CI in Auckland Director, Xuelin Zhou; and Programme Manager at Tui Tuia Learning Circle, Stephanie Mortimore, delivered insightful and inspiring talks that captivated attendees, while other keynote speakers (Lawrence Jun Zhang the Professor of Linguistics-in-Education at UoA and Belinda Sydenham, NCEA Implementation Facilitator from the Ministry of Education), panelists, and workshop leaders kept everyone engaged and excited throughout the two-day event. Attendees were treated to a wide range of topics, from the latest advancements in language technology to best practices for online and in-person teaching, and the importance of cultural competence in language learning.

In addition to the informative sessions, attendees had plenty of opportunities for networking and community building. The Fifth Oceania Chinese Teachers’ Conference 2023 showcased the vitality and creativity of the Chinese language education community.
