Auckland students achieved success in Chinese Bridge’s NZ national final
CI in Auckland’s Pembridge House hosted a dozen young students from various Auckland secondary schools on Sunday, August 8. They are the regional Chinese Bridge Speech Competition winners who qualified for the New Zealand national final.

Although the final was an online virtual event hosted by the CI at the University of Canterbury, the finalists in Auckland gathered onsite and participated remotely as the Team Auckland. The students were accompanied by their supporting families and coaching teachers. After nearly one and a half years with Covid tension, Pembridge House was packed with joy again. Besides the students from Auckland, another over twenty students from lower North Island and South Island participated in this virtual event.
Two Auckland students, Zhen Ng from Sacred Heart College and Makaleb Ualesi from St Peter’s College, claimed the awards of best talents in both Junior and Senior categories.
Zhen also topped among all the contestants from the country and won the First Prize in Junior Category. 11-year-old Jennifer Sun from Mission Height Junior College, the youngest finalist in the day, won the Second Prize. Kristin School’s Sahaj Sepra brought home a Third Prize in the same category.
In Senior Category, Makaleb Ualesi and Yujin Park from Rangitoto College scored Second and Third places with their excellent speech presentations and cultural performances.
Big congratulations to the winners mentioned above and all the other participants, also to the schools and families involved. All their efforts and commitments in learning the Chinese language and culture made the Chinese Bridge Speech Competition a platform for showcasing Chinese learning in New Zealand schools.
