The “Chinese Bridge” Speech Competition Prize-giving Ceremony

The “Chinese Bridge” Speech Competition Prize-giving Ceremony, hosted by the Confucius Institute in Auckland, was held on Saturday, 13 June at the University of Auckland.

More than 100 guests attended the event, including Consul General Chen Shijie; Confucius Institute in Auckland Advisory Board member Mr Danny Chan; ICBC Deputy CEO and sponsor representative Mr Yong Wang; competition winners; parents and teachers; and school principals, Mr Louis Heap from Arahoe School, Mr Danny O’Connor from ACG Strathallan, and Mr Richard Winn, Acting Principal from Lynfield College.

The ceremony celebrated the achievements of students who participated in this year’s competition. It opened with speeches from key speakers, who highlighted the importance of language learning, cultural understanding and cultural diversity.

As the ceremony took place just a few days before the Dragon Boat Festival, the Institute incorporated elements of this much celebrated and long-standing Chinese festival into the programme, adding a taste of culture and an air of festivity to the occasion. Guests enjoyed Chinese performances and zongzi, a traditional rice dumpling eaten during the festival, making the prize-giving a double celebration enjoyed by all.
